The Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobe: 15 Pieces to Pack on Repeat

There is something about fall that makes me want to plan a trip. Give me a charming small town, changing leaves, a cozy hotel, crisp mornings and somewhere good to grab dinner at the end of the day and I’m there.

But fall trips can also be surprisingly hard to pack for.

You may leave the hotel in 45 degree weather and be carrying your sweater by lunch. You need comfortable clothes for exploring all day but still want something a little nicer for dinner. And somehow those chunky sweaters and boots take up an entire suitcase before you have even finished packing.

Over the years, Ive learned that the secret is packing pieces that work together instead of packing individual outfits.

So I put together my Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobe: 15 classic pieces that can be mixed, matched and layered for an entire fall getaway.

Whether you’re headed to Vermont for the foliage, spending a long weekend in the mountains or planning a fall city trip, this is where I’d start.

What is a Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

A travel capsule is essentially a small collection of clothing that can be work multiple ways.

Instead of packing a completely different outfit for every day of your trip, you’re choosing pieces that coordinate with one another. The jeans you wear with a sweater one day. can work with a button-down and jacket the next. Your loafers can work for sightseeing and dinner.

For fall, I gravitate toward a classic neutral palette

cream – camel – chocolate brown – black – denim

Not only do these colors feel quintessentially fall, but almost everything can be worn together.

1. The Four Tops

I would start with four tops that can be worn alone or layered.

White Button-Down: This might be the hardest working piece in the suitcase. Wear it alone, underneath a sweater, or cardigan, or slightly oversized with jeans.

Striped Sweater: A classic stripe instantly gives an outfit that “New England in the fall” feeling without being overly themed.

Neutral Sweater: Choose cream, oatmeal, camel or chocolate brown. I prefer something lightweight enough to layer rather than an extremely chunky knit.

White or Cream Tee: Nothing exciting, but you’ll wear it constantly. It’s perfect under jackets & cardigans and makes an easy travel day outfit.

2. Three Bottoms

You really don’t need five pairs of pants for a long weekend.

I’d bring:

Straight Leg Denim: perfect for any type of shoe. Jeans are great for daytime exploring and can be dressed up for dinner

Black and/or Brown Trousers: for dinners, travel days, or day. when you just want something other. than denim.

Wrinkle Free Casual Pants: Its always nice to have an easy to pack, easy to wear pair of casual pants that can be a versatile piece in your suitcase for adventuring or traveling.

3. Three Fall Layers

The Barn Jacket: If I were choosing one jacket for a classic fall trip, this would probably be it. A barn jacket looks just as good over a sweater and jeans and it does over a button-down and trousers.

A Trench Coat or Suede Jacket: This one can depend on the destination: a trench for NYC, Boston or Charleston, Suede for Vermont, Colorado, Jackson Hole or other mountain destinations.

A Plaid Jacket: this is a fun bonus item to pack if you have room in your suitcase. A plaid jacket screams fall and is perfect for those casual strolls.

4. The Only Shoes I’d Bring

Shoes are where I tend to overpack, so I give myself a 3 pair rule and typically wear the 4th pair on the plane.

Comfortable Sneakers: These are what I tend to wear on the plane. They are for travel days, long walk and sightseeing.

Loafers: they instantly make jeans and sweaters look more put together and elevated, but are still practical enough for daytime.

Heeled Boots: Fall dinner outfit solved.

Chelsea Boots: If room in my suitcase allows, I like to pack of pair of Blundstone Chelsea Boots, especially if our trip involves some adventuring or hiking. They are cute enough to wear strolling around town, but practical enough to wear on a hike. If I am planning a city trip, I can typically nix these from the suitcase.

5. Don’t Forget the Accessories

I don’t count accessories as part of my 15 core pieces because they take up so little room and they are one of the easiest ways to change up the outfit and make it look completely different.

I’d add:

  • Leather tote
  • Crossbody bag
  • Leather belt
  • Silk scarf or bandana
  • Sunglasses
  • Simple two toned jewelry

A scarf tied around your neck or bag can completely change a basic sweater and jeans outfit, and it takes up practically zero space in your suitcase.

Four Easy Fall Travel Outfit Formulas

Travel Day:

white tee + jacket + casual pants + sneakers + tote

Exploring All Day:

sweater + trousers + plaid jacket + loafers and crossbody

Dinner:

white button down + jeans + belt + heeled boots + trench coat + jewelry + handbag + silk scarf

Cool Fall Day:

striped sweater layered over button down + jeans + barn jacket + sneakers

And then start switching things around

Put the barn jacket over the button down. Wear the trench coat with trousers, swap the loafers for boots, wear the striped sweater with trousers. Suddenly 15 pieces can create far more outfits than you’ll actually need for this trip.

Where I’d Wear this Capsule

One reason I love this particular wardrobe is that is works for so many of my favorite kinds of fall trips.

I’d pack almost this exact formula for Vermont or New England, leaning heavily into the sweaters, loafers and barn jacket.

For a Colorado mountain getaway, I’d add the suede jacket and boots.

For NYC, I’d swap the barn jacket for a trench coat and lean into the trousers and loafers more.

And for somewhere warmer like Charleston, I’d bring lighter layers and probably throw in a dress while leaving one of the heavier sweaters at home.

The capsule doesn’t have to be identical for every destination. Think of these 15 pieces as your starting point, then make one or two swaps based on the forecast and what you’ll actually be doing.

My Biggest Fall Packing Rule

Before anything goes into my suitcase, I ask:

Can I wear this at least two ways?

If I’m packing a top that only work with one specific pair of pants or shoes that only work with one dinner outfit, then I’m going to think twice about packing them if I am trying to pack light.

I’d much rather have a smaller suitcase filled with things I know I love wearing because let’s be honest I will probably reach for the same sweater over and over anyway.

My favorite carry on luggage options

Shop my Fall Travel Capsule

I’ve put all of the pieces from my Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobe together in one place so you don’t have to hunt for everything individually.

I’ll continue updating the collection with similar options and new finds throughout the season.

And if you’re planning a fall getaway, save or bookmark this packing list before you start packing. Fifteen versatile pieces, three pairs of shoes and a few accessories can really take you through an entire trip.

Happy Fall Travels!
